Charity Projects - Donations

In order to give various charity projects a chance, projects will change. At the moment, the projects supported are as follows:

1. Paws of Love, Romania Rescue Shelter for street dogs and dogs from Unirea kill shelter
2. Rehabilitation centres for red squirrels or hedgehogs or private rehabbers
Eckernförde Rehabilitation Centre for red squirrels: http://eichhoernchen-eck.de (official German charity)
A verifiable and reliable rehabilitation centre or private rehabber in the UK (or other country) that you
   suggest

3. Mauerseglerklinik/ Deutsche Gesellschaft für Mauersegler e.v. (Swift Clinic), Frankfurt am Main:
https://mauersegler.com and on FB (official German charity)

The procedure: There are, on principle, two options to collect donations that I would like to suggest.
1. You could verify that you have donated a certain amount agreed upon to the charity as discussed in advance by presenting your payment receipt.
2. You could transfer your donation to my account or PayPal, and I verify to you  that I have transferred your donation to said charity by presenting the payment receipt.
I will only need the date and the name of the charity to show on the slip so you can blacken your account number and all other data.
3. After either your donation has been received or you have presented your payment receipt, I will send the item to you and pay for postage for which I will require an address.
Paws of Love Romania

Paws of Love, Insuratei, Romania, is a German organisation that rescues injured and abandoned street dogs.

A core project is the rescue of dogs from Unirea kill shelter. Rescued dogs undergo an observation phase in the organisation's own Romanian shelter and are offered for adoption in Germany and Austria, having undergone a health check, vaccinations, castration and having received their EU-papers. For this purpose, you have to fill out an application. If you are not suitable as adopter, you will not be given a dog. The organisation advises on suitable dogs depending on your situation. Transports of adopted dogs take place once a month. On their way back, they take donated items to Romania.

Pfötchenliebe is the respecitve German partner organisation. The organisation has several dog foster homes in Germany and will take adopted dogs back, if there is a problem or an emergency. Dogs are treated by Bucharest vet clinic and by a vet in Germany. Expenses amount due do food and vet costs. There are constant fights among dogs in Unirea for food and rank order which cause terrible injuries and infections. Since most dogs in Unirea are not vaccinated, there may also be outbreaks of disease, such as parvovirus, which is not dangerous for humans but often deadly for dogs.
Eckernförde Red Squirrel Rehabilitation Centre

The yellow-blue city coat of arms of Eckernförde on the Baltic Sea depicts waves and a castle tower with a jumping squirrel above it. Squirrels are very much present throughout the town of Eckernförde in other ways as well. The Red Squirrel Rehabilitation Centre is located on the edge of the town in a forested area.

There, squirrels find a home in large enclosures if they are injured, need to be raised or are unable to survive in the wild. The centre welcomes visitors, and there are guided tours. Squirrels waiting to be released have no more contact with humans so that they remain wild animals that keep their distance.

Other private rehabbers frequently spend a portion of the money they earn and all their leisure time to rescue animals, including getting up regularly at night to feed young animals.
Hedgehog Rescue and Rehab

Hedgehogs are facing a difficult time, and some even predict they will die out, due to a lack of insects, specifically beetles. To fill their stomachs, they eat snails which intrinsically carry parasites. As a consequence they end up being out and about during daytime, weakened, ill and desperate which seals their fate as flies start to lay eggs on them and the fly larvae will eat them alive from the inside out.

Rehabbers take in ill, injured and weak hogs, examine them for fly eggs/larvae and parasites, feed them so they can gain enough weight for the winter and, if all fails, overwinter them in a safe environment.
Frequently, this is a daunting task, and it's also expensive.
Mauerseglerklinik (Swift Clinic) Frankfurt am Main

The director and vet, Dr Christiane Haupt, has hundreds of swifts in her care every year that are released upon recovery, either in Germany (during spring and summer) or in southern Spain, not far from Africa, their travel destination.

Interventions focus on the so-called imping of feathers. A swift that cannot fly can't live. They spend their entire lives in the air and only land in Europe to nest.

Swifts can even sleep on the wing by turning off one half of their brains respectively. Their feathers are replaced very slowly and one feather at a time. Therefore, it is feasible to implant individual but intact feathers of a fellow swift that has died in a swift with damaged feathers, using super glue. Yet, I would like to warn against laypeople trying to stick on feathers in any which way. There once was a craftsman who had found a pretty "robust" solution, which can mean certain death for the swift. Imping is a complex surgical intervention that has to be carried out by trained vets. There are only few persons who have mastered this procedure.

The swift can continue to live and nest with borrowed feathers. As time passes, it will push out its own feathers again, and the implanted feathers will fall off, leaving it with its own intact plumage once more.

The process of imping has been known since the Middle Ages and was then used on falcons, using little metal tubes to affix feathers at the quill.

Prior to their release, swifts practice flying in a specific exercise room to train their flight muscles. The large number of rescued swifts that otherwise could not continue to live makes a huge difference.

Expenses arise from the clinic building and food and material costs.
